Our Philosophy about Dance
Project: Dance! Devon believes in open access to all. Our classes welcome people of all ages, of any ability from athlete to physically challenged and also anyone who may have a learning disability. While certain dance figures may be adapted to suit certain students, no discrimination is made and all are encouraged to have a go. In our shows we encourage all who want to to be part of the cast, help in the production or participate in the creation of the story lines.
All our students are encouraged and supported to undertake amateur awards in the many styles of dance we offer, and in drama and musical theatre too. After the age of 16 students may embark on the Professional route attaining qualifications with and membership of the UKA.
Karen and Steve are a married couple who met through dance. Both had danced and attained some amateur awards, Karen in Devon and Steve in Oxford. They met when their respective training in their careers was coming to fruition. Karen is a nurse and Steve worked at the Bodleian. Library in Oxford repairing old books and manuscripts as a hand bookbinder and senior conservationist.
They met at a disco class and when chatting with the teacher it was discovered that she knew the teachers who had taught Karen. She asked Karen and Steve to dance together, and they have now been married for over 30 years.
Sadly, Steve had to stop dancing due to severe hip problems, Karen took up other styles and began to teach tap for a local dance school. Also Karen was studying martial arts attaining a black belt in Kyushindo Karate, this pays dividends in the Street and Hip-Hop styles she now teaches. They went back to ballroom and Latin after Steve had a hip replacement and both turned professional. They taught for the famous Dance Rhythms Ltd, for a few years and then wanted their own school and Project: Dance! was born which after 10 years has grown into Project: Dance!Devon.
